Best network lab software in 2026: an honest comparison
EVE-NG cut its free tier from 63 nodes to 7 in June 2026, which changed the answer. A straight look at ten network lab tools, including where ours loses.

We imported every Dynamips and Cisco IOL image we had and pinged each across a real link - 33 of 40 worked. Full breakdown, plus the one real limitation we found.
6 min read →What we write about
Two kinds of post end up here, and nothing else. The first is a compatibility campaign: we take a whole class of device images, import every one we can lay hands on, boot them, link them and push traffic across them, then publish the count that worked and the count that did not. The second is an engineering write-up: how a part of netplex. is built, or what broke and what we changed because of it.
We publish the failures too. A compatibility post claiming forty out of forty images worked would be a marketing page rather than a test result, and you would find out the truth the first time you imported your own image. Where another tool beats us, our comparison pages say so in the same plain terms.
Looking for something else? The knowledge base has short how-to guides for using netplex., the roadmap shows what is being built next, and known issues lists faults we have confirmed and are working on.
