Straight with you

EVE-NG's HTML5 console genuinely works in a browser, and self-hosting gives you full control of the box - if that's what you want, it's a fine path. netplex. just removes the “stand up and maintain a server for every person” step: one install, everyone gets a browser link. You still run netplex. on a host - the difference is nobody installs anything on their own machine.

Is there an official EVE-NG online or hosted version?
No. EVE-NG is software you install on your own server or virtual machine. Some third parties rent hosted EVE-NG instances, but there is no official cloud product, and you are still responsible for images and licensing on a rented box.
Can I use EVE-NG entirely in a browser?
Partly. The topology editor and management interface are browser-based, which is genuinely ahead of desktop tools. Console access is where it stops - EVE-NG hands your browser a telnet:// or vnc:// link and expects a client integration pack installed on the desktop to catch it, so a locked-down machine cannot open a console.
What does browser-native actually mean here?
That every part of the workflow runs in the tab: the canvas, the serial and SSH consoles, packet capture, and file transfer. netplex. renders consoles with xterm.js inside the page, so the machine in front of you needs nothing installed - a Chromebook, a borrowed laptop or a locked-down corporate build all work the same.
Can several people use the same lab at once?
In netplex., yes - multiple people can open the same running topology, see each other's changes on the canvas, and use lab chat, on the free tier. EVE-NG supports multiple users on Pro, but each still needs the client integration pack installed to reach a console.
Do I still need a server somewhere?
Yes, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. The emulator runs vendor firmware under QEMU, which needs real CPU and RAM on a Linux host. What changes is that only that one machine needs setting up - everyone else just opens a link.
